噏三噏四 |
Traditional Chinese characters play an important role in Chinese culture. Every character has its own story. When a word is simplified, specific parts of the character are excluded and the meaning of the word can be lost. For example; In the word愛 (love); there is a 心 (heart) in it. When the心is taken away, the word becomes 爱. There is no longer a heart in love- how do you love without a heart? The word 見 (see), has目 (eye) in it. We see with our eyes. When the word simplifies to见, there is no longer an eye in it- how can you see without eyes? 門(door), 開(open). In開(open), it looks like there is a man opening the 門(door). When simplified,開becomes 开and門is gone.Where is the door? There are jokes about how the Chinese characters have changed; people don’t have true love because愛becomes爱 and doesn't have a heart in it.People are blind because 见doesn’t have an eye like in見. People don’t need the 門 for them to open, and they can pass through everywhere freely. Traditional Chinese characters are not only about having more strokes. It is about how meaningful they are. It is not complicated, but elegant. Although not everyone chooses to write with Traditional characters, it is still a precious part of our culture and the world. Please preserve it and keep appreciating the soul and spirit of Traditional Chinese Characters, even if you write and learn simplified Chinese.
